Retirees and Spouses Health Insurance Coverage
When an employee retires from the Town of Canton or Canton Public Schools, he/she can elect to remain on the health insurance plans, provided they are drawing a pension from the Town of Canton. The premiums will be deducted from his/her pension check(s).
The Town of Canton is currently subsidizing the insurance rates for retirees and their spouses. The current monthly contribution is 25% of the insurance cost. In event of the death of a retiree or spouse please contact the Human Resources Department at click here.
Federal Law requires that you must apply for Medicare if you are 65 years or older, even if you think you are not eligible. You and/or your spouse may qualify under a spouse’s (including divorced or deceased spouse’s) record. The closest Social Security Office to Canton, MA is located at: One (1) Edgewater Drive, Suite 102, Norwood, MA 02062. The telephone number is 1-800-772-1213. Also, they have a website for applying for Medicare at www.socialsecurity.gov/medicare for additional program information.
The Town of Canton requires retirees and their spouses, who are eligible for Medicare, to enroll in Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Medicare Part B (physician’s insurance) if retirees and their spouses choose to enroll in the Town’s Medicare supplemental insurance plan, Medex, which includes prescription coverage. (Do NOT enroll in Medicare Part D). Medex is a Blue Cross Blue Shield Supplemental Insurance plans. Medicare Supplement plans are sold by private insurance companies to fill “gaps” in Medicare coverage.
If retirees and/or their spouses do not qualify for Medicare, please send the letter from Social Security to the Human Resources Department.
