The Rotary Club of Canton, after considerable thought and research, adopted the Neponset River under the State of Massachusetts Adopt-A- Stream Program. The Club's goal was to raise the awareness of Canton residents to the recreational and economic importance of the Neponset River. To raise this awareness the club created a River Day Celebration with for-profit and non-profit exhibitors, children's games, and the canoe race as the fun activities. The River Day/Canoe Race continues to generate a great deal of publicity and support within the town of Canton and is now an established springtime event. The Neponset River Watershed Association, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, local river-monitoring teams, and the Rotary Club of Canton are now actively working together toward improving the water quality of the Neponset River.
