**It is tax time again**
Free income tax assistance is
available again to low and moderate income seniors through the Tax
Aid Program through AARP. A trained volunteer will be at the COA
office beginning Tuesday, February 9, 2010. Appointments are
necessary and can be made by calling the Council on Aging at
781-828-1323
Seniors must bring their Federal and
State forms received in the mail; as well as all W-2’s and 1099
forms, real estate tax bill (for circuit Breaker Tax Credit), water
bill, proof of all tax exempt income, check registers if possible
and lastly copies of 2008 federal and state returns.
Circuit Breaker Tax Credit/Refund
The Massachusetts Circuit Breaker Tax
Program is for persons 65 an older whose property taxes (or 25% of
rent) exceed 10% of their annual income and who meet other
qualifying criteria. Even if you did not file Massachusetts state
income tax forms, if you meet the other requirements, you maybe
eligible for this refundable tax credit for this year and the past
three years. You may file for 2006, 2007 and 2008 now. Deadline
for filing is April 15, 2010.
The maximum credit you may receive
for 2009 is $960.00, for 2008 is $930 and $900 for 2007. There are
other qualifications guidelines, including income and assessed
